What date was Jesus really born on?
Jesus was not born 25. December at least The only thing the bible researchers agree on is that Jesus was not born on 25. December. They are pretty sure that it was NOT that date.
Why 25. December was chosen? It is likey that the date was chosen to co-opt other pagan traditions, such as the birthday of the sun, that happened around December 25.
Even the year Jesus was born is uncertain. If it is not confusing enough that the date is not know the exact year is also not known for sure.
Jesus was most likely born in the summer or early fall. (Luke 2:7-8) says that shepherds were watching their flocks in the fields. And that does not happen in the winter. Weather in the winter those not allow shepherds to be watching their flocks in the fields at night.
Secondly (Luke 2:1-4) says that Jesus's parents went to Bethlehem for the census. The census would likely happen in the middle of winter since the cold conditions and bad roads during winter time.
The exact dates are perhaps not that important as long as we remember what Jesus told us and keep Christmas a time for prayer and not a commercial holiday.
